TMC Survey

Technology Management Council, Professional Communication Society and      Society on Social Implications of Technology Joint Chapter

Dear IEEE member,

We are considering forming a Technology Policy Activities in Canada somewhat akin to IEEE-USA activities (see www.ieeeusa.org  for background) to make provincial and federal governments aware of and responsive to the needs of our electrical engineering & technology community.  Issues that we consider to contribute with our member’s input are: individual and national opportunities, national security, public health & safety, and the environment.  The goal is to help policy makers make the right decisions for us via a better understanding of technical and social issues.

This short survey will take only a few minutes of your times but will be highly valuable to us in organizing relevant activities for IEEE members.

You can also send us your comments and ideas directly by e-mail to:

  1. Please, assess on a scale from 1 (Do not agree) to 5 ( Fully Agree) the following:  IEEE Canada  is providing me the best service on the issues related to Technology Policy Activities in Canada?:    1 2 3 4 5

  2.  A Technology Policy Committee is being considered for implementation in Canada to actively push the interests of IEEE members. On a scale of 1 to 5, where 5 is most important, rate how valuable you think it would be to engage in the following activities:

    1.  communicate with key decision makers:    1 2 3 4 5

    2. Make position statements on employment issues:    1 2 3 4 5

    3. Testify before governing bodies:    1 2 3 4 5

    4. Inform you of current issues that will affect you and how you can influence them:     1 2 3 4 5

    5. Make recommendations to provincial and federal governments:    1 2 3 4 5

    6. Conferences and workshops that bring together experts and policy makers: 1 2 3 4

    7. Support appointments of qualified engineers to key government policy posts:    1 2 3 4 5

    8. File court briefs that provide information about legal arguments:    1 2 3 4 5

    9. Common surprises:    1 2 3 4 5
    10. Other topic, please specify:

  3. For our efforts to be effective, we have to know your viewsOn a scale of 1 to 5, where 5 is most important, rate how important it is to you and the IEEE to have a strong voice on these issues:
    1. Career, retirement, and workforce:    1 2 3 4 5
    2. Intellectual property:     1 2 3 4 5

    3. Provincial government activities:   1 2 3 4 5

    4. Federal government activities:   1 2 3 4 5
    5. Licensure and registration mobility 1 2 3 4 5
    6. Energy policy:   1 2 3 4 5

    7. Employment:    1 2 3 4 5
    8. Transportation & aerospace technology:    1 2 3 4 5
    9. Communications & information technology:    1 2 3 4 5
    10. Research and development policy:    1 2 3 4 5

    11. Medical technology:    1 2 3 4 5
    12. Other topic, please specify:

  4. What other technology and engineering policy issues are important to you that you would like IEEE Canada to be championing on your behalf?:

  5. IEEE-USA collects $34 US per member in addition to basic IEEE dues to provide the services mentioned above. IEEE Canada provides services to Canadian members via activities such as publication of the Review (about $24).  IEEE contribute to these activities via an allocation of money on an annual basis.    How much of your present Canadian allocation from IEEE do you think it would be worth to allocate to support a Technology Policy Committee?

    Choose one.   $0   $5  $10   $15 $20 $25  $30

  6. Your name & Section, optional:

Thank you for your collaboration!

Sincerely,
