ABSTRACT:
The Bold and the Brave investigates how women have strived throughout
history to gain access to education and careers in science and
engineering. Author Monique Frize, herself an engineer for over 40
years, introduces the reader to key concepts and debates that context-
ualize the obstacles women have faced and continue to face in the fields
of science and engineering. She focuses on the history of women’s
education in mathematics and science through the ages, from antiquity
to the Enlightenment. While opportunities for women were often purposely
limited, she reveals how many women found ways to explore science
outside of formal education.

ABSTRACT: The definition of, and basic principles of, swarm intelligence
are first discussed.  Application areas are listed.  Three swarm
intelligence paradigm examples are reviewed: cultural algorithms, ant
colony optimization, and particle swarm optimization.  Tracking and
optimizing dynamic systems with swarms is discussed.  Recent applications
are summarized: unmanned air vehicle mission planning, putting a person
in the swarm using an NK landscape game, and optimizing resource
allocation.  Measuring swarm population diversity, and using non-
parametric statistics for performance metrics are reviewed.  Finally,
recent accomplishments of the swarm intelligence field, and challenges
being faced by the field, are outlined.

ABSTRACT:  One can’t learn everything about signal integrity in one hour,
or in one day or even in one week. But most engineers don’t have the time
to spend weeks learning the field. If all you will ever spend studying
signal integrity is one hour, this is the hour you should take.
By leveraging just ten design habits described in this lecture, any
engineer can dramatically improve the signal integrity performance of
their high speed products.

ABSTRACT: Processing requirements of the majority of embedded
applications are growing and often cannot be solved by a single embedded
processor, but by extending the systems with customized configurable
hardware or designing multiprocessing systems. In this seminar, we will
present research performed at the University of Ottawa that deals with
the following aspects of system on chip design: instruction set
extension, configurable processors and hardware accelerators. The
research is directed towards designing a system that will automatically
generate a customized processor and hardware accelerators on an FPGA
platform for the given user code based on input requirements and
constraints.

Communications Society & Broadcast Technology Society (ComSoc & BTS)
CONTACT: Balakumar Balasingam  balasing@site.uottawa.ca
ABSTRACT: Particle filtering is a Monte Carlo – based methodology for
sequential signal processing. It is designed for estimation of hidden
processes that are dynamic and that can exhibit most severe
nonlinearities. Also, it can be applied with equal ease to problems that
involve any type of probability distributions. Therefore, it is not
surprising that particle filtering has gained immense popularity.
In this talk, first, the basics of particle filtering will be provided
with description of its essential steps. Then some important topics of
the theory will be addressed including Rao-Blackwellization, smoothing,
and estimation of constant parameters.  Finally, a presentation of most
recent advances in the theory will be given. The talk will contain signal
processing examples which will aid in gaining valuable insights about the
methodology.

ABSTRACT:  One can’t learn everything about signal integrity in one hour,
or in one day or even in one week. But most engineers don’t have the time
to spend weeks learning the field. If all you will ever spend studying
signal integrity is one hour, this is the hour you should take.
By leveraging just ten design habits described in this lecture, any
engineer can dramatically improve the signal integrity performance of
their high speed products.

see what our executives have planned!
As you renew your IEEE membership for next year, consider to add
WIE membership (only $25USD/year). Recent surveys indicated that
over 25% of WIE membership is male. They responded that while they
did not require directly services from WIE, they paid the dues in
order to support the women in the profession and also the women in
their lives who consider/will consider engineering as a career.
So please consider to support.
Reminder that WIE membership is free for students (undergrad and
grad) as well as for Life Members so check WIE when you renew
this year! Please contact for questions, comments, etc -

ABSTRACT:
Osteoporosis related fractures are among the most common causes of
disability and are a major contributor to medical care cost in many
parts of the world. Osteoporosis affects 28 million Americans with an
estimated direct cost of 14 billion dollars per year. The surgical
treatment of osteoporotic fractures usually requires the fixation of
bone fragments with screws, which remains a significant clinical
challenge. Bone screw fixations anchored in osteoporotic bone have a
failure rate of up to 35%. In this talk an interdisciplinary approach
will be discussed that combines a novel bone screw anchor, "smart"
orthopaedic implants and tissue engineering to address these clinical
challenges.

1. IEEE Ottawa Section won hosting of ICC 2012

Thanks to hard work of Wahab Almuhtadi (past Section Chair, and
Communications Society Ottawa Chapter Chair), plus the strong support
of Telus, Ottawa Tourism, Ottawa Convention Centre, and many many other
local industry and academia supporters, the Ottawa Section has won the
right to host the prestigious International Conference on Communi-
cations in 2012. It may seem so long away; however, this effort has
taken a year to get to this point and a lot of work is yet to come.
More detail will be provided on our website. In the next few months,
we will be looking forward to contacting those who have already come
forward to help.

The announcement was made on June 17, 2009, at the International
Conference on Communications (ICC) 2009 in Dresden, Germany.
Ottawa beat out other bidding major international cities. ICC 2012
will be held at the Ottawa Convention Centre in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
from June 10 till June 15, 2012. The estimated number of the conference
attendees will be 1500 to 2000. The conference will have a significant
impact in regaining the reputation and business of the Canadian telecom
and high tech companies that are facing many challenges during these
recent years, and would raise the profile and visibility of these
companies. As well as the conference will benefit the academia,
scientific and engineering research, industry and local business
in Ottawa.

ICC2008 was held in Beijing, China www.ieee-icc.org/2008. ICC2009 was

Abstract:
Commoditization of voice service has reached such a state that anyone
with a server to provide registry and addressing (identification)
functions can offer it to the Internet community using the voice over
the Internet protocol (IP) or VoIP technology. Traditional client-server
model has evolved to peer-to-peer model for near-real-time voice and
multimedia (gaming, video, etc.) sessions. Voice mail service is being
replaced by Instant-messaging (for presence-announced users), use of
Star codes for advanced call/session feature activation is being replaced
by Web based service-provisioning interface, and so on. Similar
revolution is also happening in the areas of IP-based Television (IPTV)
service development and distribution. These are only a glimpse of what
is possible with the new/emerging converged services paradigm. However,
many issues related to reliability/availability, security/privacy,
mobility, service provisioning and continuity, regulation, operations,
and quality of service and experience (QoS/QoE) still remain open.
In this discussion, we will explore the current activities of the
traditional service providers to find implementable and operable
solutions to these problems in the evolving Next Generation Networks
(NGNs). The objective is to support VoIP, IPTV, and other multimedia
services seamlessly over a variety of interconnected networks using the
emerging IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) and service-oriented architecture
/network (SOA/SON) based standards

ABSTRACT: Every electronic equipment use some type of shielding, and
from a theoretical point of view, electromagnetic shielding is among
the difficult areas of EMC. The lecture is introducing basic shielding
concepts, insisting on their practical limitations, and presents the
typical engineering problems associated with shielding. Among the
aspects discussed are the materials used for shielding, chassis
resonances, shielding integrity problems (seams, joints, apertures,
perf patterns), aperture coupling and shield's grounding.

Abstract The stability and performance analysis of dynamic systems
affected by structured uncertainties usually requires the solution of
non-convex optimization problems. A possible way to tackle such
problems is to construct a family of convex relaxations which provide
upper or lower bounds to the solution of the original problem. In this
talk, convex relaxations for several robustness problems are presented
by exploiting classical results and providing new insights on the theory
of homogeneous polynomial forms. In particular, a general framework is
introduced for dealing with positivity of forms via the solution of
linear matrix inequalities, which are a special class of convex problems.
Lyapunov analysis of uncertain systems affected by time-invariant or
time-varying uncertainty, computation of the parametric robust stability
margin, robust performance analysis for polytopic systems, are examples of
problems addressed within the proposed framework. This talk is based on
the new book "Homogeneous Polynomial Forms for Robustness Analysis of
Uncertain Systems" by G. Chesi et al. (Springer, 2009, in press)

In this discussion, we will explore the current activities of the
traditional service providers to find implementable and operable solutions
to these problems in the evolving Next Generation Networks (NGNs).
The objective is to support VoIP, IPTV, and other multimedia services
seamlessly over a variety of interconnected networks using the emerging
IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) and service-oriented architecture/network
(SOA/SON) based standards

ABSTRACT: Given the recent trend whereby the designer of an EM
device or a complex system thinks that it is imperative to carry out
a “sanity check” before entering into the fabrication stage, a reliable
and general-purpose EM solver has become highly-desired as well as
invaluable part of the engineer’s toolkit. However, it is not uncommon
for the designer to run into a roadblock when attempting to simulate
many real-world problems, due primarily to the inability of the
available EM software modules to handle problems that require large
number of degrees of freedom (DoFs), which can often run into billions.
GEMS, a unique computer code which is recent entry into the EM software
scenario, was originally developed under the sponsorship of the U.S.
Navy, who needed to solve large and complex shipboard antenna problems,
such as phased arrays with thousands of elements sharing a common
platform, e.g., the mast of a ship, but found that the existing
commercial softwares were highly inadequate in their ability to solve
large problems that required a large number of DoFs to model them.

GEMS is based on the parallel FDTD algorithm, and it has been designed
to efficiently simulate large and complex EM problems using a group of
distributed computers. Another desirable and unique feature of GEMS
is that it provides a combination of EM software and hardware including
network, operating system, I/O and storage, and optimized processors
and memory. The talk will describe some of the features of GEMS,
illustrated by numerous real-world examples that involve the simulation
of large and complex EM problems, including antennas; antenna arrays;
electronic packaging; RF and microwave circuits; bio-electromagnetics;
and EMC/EMI, to name just a few.

Abstract: Well-planned and well-written technical writing is the key
to your success as a professional, and to the success of your
organization. Effective technical writing must possess two qualities:
usability and persuasiveness. Both qualities must be defined from
the reader’s perspective. Usability and persuasiveness are examined
in various technical communication processes and products of
particular relevance to engineers, scientists and other technology-
oriented professionals, including technical reports, project and
research proposals, project reviews and evaluations, and technical
papers. Special attention is given to IEEE publications and
documentation style.

4. A Talk on Reliability
Title: Microelectronics Reliability: It's evolution from Military to
Commercial Requirements.
SPEAKER: Dr. Ray Haythornthwaite,
DATE: May 21, 2009
ORGANIZED &
SPONSORED by:Ottawa Chapters of Reliability Society, Pohotonics
Society, Computer Society AP/MTT Joint Chapter,
LOCATION: TBA
CONTACT: Raed Abdullah - Raedabdullah@ieee.org

Bio of the Speaker:
Dr. Ray Haythornthwaite started in R and D the early days of micro-
electronics manufacture before turning to reliability. At the
Communications research centre, he had important reliability roles
in the Canadian space program and was responsible for the reliability
of the first gallium arsenide amplifier in space. He led teams performing
destructive physical analysis and failure analysis on the Canadarm and
space station programs while at QRL Analysis. In the last 15 years had
has been senior scientist and engineer at Canada’s world renowned
reverse engineering companies, Chipworks and Semiconductor Insights
where he had ample opportunity to see microelectronics technology
evolving . At Chipworks he led a team that recovered data from a memory
chip in the Swissair disaster. He is now retired and busy consulting..

Abstract:
The talk will be in two parts. The presentation will be maths free
with abundant illustrations of the internal structure of modern
microcircuits. The first part covers practical reliability in a rapidly
changing world where device sizes are approaching physical limits, yet
are more complex and cheaper. It shows why the traditional reliability
approach is no longer valid and how the need for survival has guided the
industry to consider reliability seriously. The second part describes
how physics and chemistry based reliability analysis is used to determine
when traditional fabrication methods must be abandoned, and as a vital
tool for selecting new and reliable technologies in both wafer
fabrication and packaging that are appropriate to the commercial high
volume market.

1. TITLE: Multipoint Real-Time Signal Analysis

SPEAKER: Dr. Nikhil Adnani, ThinkRF Corp., Ottawa, ON, Canada
DATE: Apr. 2 (Thur.), 2009
TIME: 12:00pm – 1:00pm
LOCATION: Room 4124, Mackenzie Engineering Building, Carleton University

ABSTRACT: An increase in spectrum utilization is driving the need
to use it more efficiently. Digital modulation formats, packet-data,
dynamic channel assignments and frequency hopping waveforms are some
of the techniques used to achieve this goal. These time-varying
transmission signals present new challenges for detection and analysis
in real-world operating environments. For instance reliable capture
of such waveforms with traditional test equipment such as swept-frequency
spectrum analyzers is difficult. As well, newer equipment such as vector
and real-time spectrum analyzers are not well-suited to autonomous
operation or cost-effective field deployment in real-world settings.

At this seminar a new high-performance, field-deployable, intelligent
wireless signal analyzer (WSA) will be introduced. WSA s are low-power,
compact, and can be networked with one another to create a multipoint
system for waveform detection over large geographic areas. In addition
to time, frequency and amplitude the system adds location information
to signal detection and analysis. The WSA enables a broad range of
applications including SIGINT, interference analysis, collaborative
spectrum sensing and wireless test & measurement. With 100MHz real-time
analysis bandwidth and almost 70dB dynamic range, the WSA has key
specifications comparable to high-end test equipment.

ABSTRACT: Renewable energy resources for electric power generation
are gaining momentum as the next great, green hope to substitute
for less environmentally-friendly electrical energy sources. This
trend places new challenges to the electric system operator in assuring
both angle and voltage stability of the system. This need becomes more
significant with the increase in penetration levels of renewable
generation sources. The generator types, their dynamic performance,
and interactions with electric grid will discussed at this presentation.
Reference will be made to situations where special devices and mitigation
technologies are deployed successfully.

ABSTRACT:The next wave in the information revolution will consist of
bringing intelligence to the information and communication technology
ICT) sector, allowing seamless and intelligent networking and
communication between different users using different services and
operators. This will lead to the convergence of communication
technologies, aiming at the development and deployment of cooperative
and ubiquitous networks that involve existing and future wireless and
satellite communications systems.
A critical element in enabling the convergence of different
communication systems is the development of software defined radio
(SDR) systems that can be used across different frequency bands and
for multi-standard applications. This SDR has to be developed to
support different frequency carriers and modulations schemes
concurrently, in addition to being power- and spectrum-efficient, in
order to be able handle high data rates, while being less energy-
hungry and more environmentally friendly.
The design of power amplifiers as critical components in any SDR
based communication terminal has to be considered closely together
with the system architecture, in order to ensure optimal system level
performances in terms of linearity and power efficiency. This implies
the use of adequate transmitter architectures that convert the analog
baseband information to architecture dependent amplifier driving
signals, such as sigma-delta, EE&R, Polar and LINC architectures.
This talk lays out the principles behind SDR systems and examines the
design of software-enabled linear and highly efficient RF/DSP
co-designed power amplifiers/transmitters for multi-standard and
multi-band applications. Recent advances and practical realizations

URL:http://www.ottawa.ieee.ca/comsoc/IEEE_Seminar_AdaptiveFilteringGamesforDesigningReconfigurableSensorNetworks.pdf.
ABSTRACT:This seminar deals with decentralized sensor activation and
management in large scale sensor networks using game theoretic
methods. Using recent results in economics, we describe how the theory
of global games gives a powerful paradigm for designing decentralized
data-aware sensor activation algorithms in dense sensor networks. We
show that the Nash equilibrium of the sensor network has a simple
threshold structure and exhibits a remarkable phase transition as more
data is collected. Next, we describe how decentralized adaptive
filtering algorithms with regret matching can be deployed in sensor
networks to guide network behavior to a satisfactory operating point.
A major theme of the talk will be the focus on structural properties
that result in numerically efficient algorithms rather than brute
force computational methods. Another key paradigm of the talk is the
idea of sensors learning from data and other sensors – this is
different to the traditional paradigm of sensors learning from data
alone. This seminar should be of interest to researchers and
practitioners in signal processing, sensor design, control systems
and economics/applied mathematics.

3.Title:Compensation of Long Input Delays for Unstable Nonlinear and
PDE Systems
SPEAKER: Dr. Miroslav Krstic, Distinguished Lecturer. Distinguished
Professor and Director of the Center for Control Systems and Dynamics
at UC San Diego. He is a Fellow of IEEE and IFAC
DATE & LOCATION: Evening of Thursday, March 19, 2009.
Details wll be available later.
Contact: RaedAbdullah(at)ieee.org or visit Ottawa.ieee.ca
by March 10th.
ADMISSION: Free to all – IEEE members will get the opportunity to
network prior to the presentation and snack.
ABSTRACT: Input delays create challenges in stabilization problems
in many applications for unstable plants. I will present new designs
for global stabilization of broad classes of nonlinear systems with
long input delays. I will also introduce problems where the length of
the input delay is highly uncertain, or even completely unknown, and
present adaptive control designs for stabilization in the presence of
this and other parametric uncertainties. In addition to input delays,
I will discuss other infinite-dimensional input dynamics, such as
those that combine convective and diffusive phenomena. Finally, I
will show designs for PDEs with long input delays, such as unstable
reaction-diffusion equations and anti-stable wave equations.

2. Title: "Recent Advances in Frequency Domain Equalization"
Speaker: Professor David Falconer -
Broadband Communications and Wireless Systems Centre
Dept. of Systems and Computer Engineering , Carleton University
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada K1S 5B6
email : ddf@sce.carleton.ca
Date: Thursday March 5th, 2009
Time: 6:00 PM
Location: Room EV002.184", Concordia University (corner Guy and Ste.

Organized by: IEEE Montreal Communications & IT Chapter
Abstract Frequency domain equalization (FDE) has emerged in recent
years as an effective and computationally efficient reception
technique for broadband orthogonal frequency division multiple
access (OFDMA) or single carrier (SC) wireless systems. OFDMA is
preferred for downlinks (base station to terminals) future wireless
systems, as it facilitates simple and efficient resource allocation.
SC, or variations of it, is preferred for uplinks (wireless terminals
to base stations) since it maximizes power amplifier efficiency. Both
OFDMA and SC, in combination with FDE and powerful coding techniques,
yield excellent performance in highly frequency selective single- and
multi-user channels. We survey recently proposed frequency and spatial
domain equalization techniques for single carrier and related
modulation and multiple access systems in multi-cell environments.
The techniques discussed include iterative block equalization, a new
analysis tool for turbo equalization, efficient pilot and channel
estimation schemes, and the effects of transmitter power amplifier
nonlinearities. Finally, we point out prospective applications to
future-generation broadband wireless systems.
Biography
Dr.David Falconer received the B.A. Sc. degree in Engineering Physics
from the University of Toronto and the S.M. and Ph.D. degrees in
Electrical Engineering from M.I.T. After a year as a postdoctoral
fellow at the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden he was

7. Algonquin College Students Branch Election Update:

A meeting was held on January 22, 2009 to elect a new executive body
as listed below:

Chair, Patrick Couture at Cout0009@algonquincollege.com
Co-Chair, Andrew Jacques at jacques.andy@gmail.com
Secretary, Emily Chan at chan.emily.m@gmail.com
Treasurer, Dominic Moon at moon0038@algonquincollege.com

In addition to electing the new executives some of the points
discussed are summarised below, This is a fresh start for this group
and need to organise a few internal meetings before putting forth a
plan of action and set firm dates. At the forefront of the activities,
there is a need to quickly initiate a targeted recruiting campaign at
Algonquin College to get our membership up from only 8 student
members at present as per the available data.

For this activity we are looking at staffing a stand for a full week
2 to 3 hours a day. Anticipated needs for this campapign will be to
create some posters targeting School of Advance Technology students
and give aways & promotional material.

Some of the other ideas put forth in this regard are:
invite Industries that employ IEEE members to take part in a carrier
fair at Algonquin College.
IEEE friendly inter disciplinary competitions within the College.
Montly group discussion for students in their final year project
where people can discuss any issues they have and possibly get
assistance from other IEEE members.
