Join IEEE Ottawa GOLD, EWB Ottawa Regional Chapter and IEEE Humanitarian Technology Network to learn about

“The Global Engineer of the New Millennium”

This event will include a panel of three speakers who will introduce you to IEEE’s new initiatives in the Humanitarian field and the Humanitarian Technology Challenge. Speakers from Engineers Without Borders explore parallels and discuss what it means to be a Global Engineer and how they contribute as volunteers. Please see below for more information about the speakers.

Speaker Information

Alfredo Herrera

Alfredo is an electrical engineer who has been active in the IEEE for many years. Alfredo’s most recent roles include chair of the IEEE-Canada humanitarian initiatives adhoc committee, chair of the Innovate North America FPGA programming competiton and vice-chair of the Ottawa joint chapters of the TMC/PCS/SSIT. He is currently employed in the telecom industry as a senior hardware designer. He is currently volunteering for the IEEE Humanitarian Technology Challenge.

Matt Retallack

First joining EWB in 2002, Matt led a number of project initiatives with the EWB’s Dalhousie University Chapter. He completed his Masters in Civil Engineering in 2006 before moving to Ottawa to start a career in science-policy. Matt was involved in early stages of developing the Global Engineer concept and continues to represent EWB within the professional community.

Jen Hiscock

Also a long-time EWB member, and fresh from a multi-stakeholder panel discussion of ERTW vs. ESTW (Engineers Serve The World), Jen Hiscock is fast becoming a thought leader on Global Engineering within the community. In 2008/09 Jen spent 13 months in Ghana helping to form what is now the Governance and Rural Infrastructure team (G&RI) before returning to work with Natural Resources Canada. There she is helping Canmet ENERGY build a Strategic Plan toward a more sustainable energy future for 2030 and beyond.
