The submission deadline has passed.
CISDA 2009 also solicits proposals for special sessions with the technical scope of the symposium, generally focusing on a special hot topic. Papers submitted to special sessions are to be peer reviewed with the same criteria used for the contributed papers. Researchers interested in organizing special sessions are invited to submit formal proposals to the Special Sessions Chair. Special sessions will be accepted on a rolling basis until the deadline.

Applied Computational Intelligence in Biometrics

A special session of Applied Computational Intelligence in Biometrics will provide an interdisciplinary forum for research scientists, military experts, and students from around the world to discuss the latest advances in the field of Computational Intelligence and its application to real world problems in Biometrics. Computational Intelligence includes neural networks, fuzzy logic, evolutionary algorithms, swarm intelligence, and other emerging learning or optimization techniques. Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
- Biometric algorithms, techniques and systems
- Signal and image processing for biometric data
- Biometric applications for security and defense
- Biometric documents (RFID, ePassort, etc.)
- Liveness test and spoofing countermeasures.
- Multiple biometrics, multi-modal biometrics and intelligent data fusion
- Human factors, privacy issues, and protection of the biometric templates
- Mobile biometric devices and embedded biometric systems
- Biometric conformance and interoperability testing/evaluation
Military Operational Logistics Modeling and Simulation

The goal of the special session is to highlight the applications of modeling and simulation in military operational logistics, and at the same time bring together modeling and simulation researchers and practitioners to exchange experiences, research results and ideas. The session topics cover logistics supply chain and distribution modeling and analysis at any level of aggregation or abstraction with state-of-the-art theoretical results, applications and software solutions. Contributions from the broader field of logistics are welcome, including but not restricted to:

Adaptive Network Security and Management

The complexity of the communication networks requires distributed, autonomous and preferably adaptive systems that learn from their environment and ultimately adapt to changing conditions. The goal of the special session is to provide an interdisciplinary forum for network management and security scientists, practitioners, and students to meet with computational intelligence researchers to solve network management and security problems using adaptive techniques to create dependable and survivable systems. Complex Systems Engineering: Defence and Security Applications

Military missions or public security scenarios entail operations in a very complex environment. Achieving an objective in such a complex environment necessarily requires a complex solution, applying principles from the field of complex systems. Can we engineer an artificial system that uses the concepts of self-organization, decentralization, evolution that we see in biological entities to solve the problem posed by the complex, asymmetric environments and threats? An important tool to this effort is to quantify complexity in a way that will guide the design of our complex engineered system. Topics of interest include but are not limited to:

Computational Intelligence Techniques for Complex Adaptive Systems in Defence and Security

Growing complexity in defence systems and operations emphasizes the need
for unconventional approaches capable of handling challenges of new
operating environments. This special session focuses on CI-inspired
technologies, as applied to complex adaptive systems in the defence and
security context. The objective is to explore new approaches to systems
and processes in which interdependencies between components are
important and in which heterogeneity, variability and openness to ever
changing environments are essential features.
Contributions on the following CI topics are welcome:
- CIĀ techniques for analyzing complex social and socio-technical systems
- Extraction of relationships/networks from data
- Intelligent tools for analyzing and modelling adaptive behaviour, coordination, and learning

Computational Intelligence Systems in Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) or uninhabited combat vehicles operate in environments with high likelihood of damage and failure. The complexity is further increased by deciding what are minimal flight-critical systems and how to improve endurance. Thus, there is a need to design intelligent systems to provide for example autonomous flight trajectory reconfiguration for one or more UAVs in a variety of environments, and controller reconfiguration without affecting mission success. The objective of the special session is to explore the use of advanced computational intelligent techniques in:
