A Reason to Celebrate: IEEE 125th Anniversary in the Valley Nov. 4, 2009 Canadian Science and Technology Museum Free Parking ABSTRACT A story based on anecdotes and remembrances of the people, the institutions and industries, and the remarkable projects they worked on, that created one of the largest concentrations of information communications technology in the world -- the Ottawa Region.
SPEAKER David C. Coll was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He received the B.Eng. in Engineering Physics and the M.Eng. in Electrical Engineering from McGill University, Montreal, in 1955 and 1956, respectively. He studied Information Theory at the MIT from 1957 to 1959, and received the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Carleton University in 1966. From 1956 to 1967, he was with the Defence Research Telecommunications Establishment. During this time he conducted research in ionospheric sounding, HF and meteor burst communication systems, signal processing, real time computing, and adaptive data communications systems. In 1967, he joined the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering at Carleton University, and retired as Professor Emeritus in 1998. Prof. Coll taught in the areas of communications and computers, and since retirement has lectured in graduate courses and Carleton’s Learning-in-Retirement series. His areas of research included communications, digital signal processing, the "Wired City", and applications of broadband multimedia communication networks. Prof. Coll was Chairman of the Department on two occasions and was Director of the M. Eng. in Telecommunications Technology Management Program at the time of his retirement. Dr. Coll is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering and a Life Fellow of the IEEE. He is currently Chair of the IEEE Ottawa Section Life Members Affinity Group. --- The meeting is co-sponsored by the Life Members Affinity Group, and I hope that you will come out for the occasion to share memories and meet old friends.
